New to bodybuilding?

This guide should be your first read before you try anything else!
This guide is for beginners and intermediate bodybuilders who might have missed some important advice. There are no advanced techniques here but just basic bodybuilding theory and how it works.

Most important of all, it's highly advised that you follow the guidelines listed below for a while before you start to break them and do your own thing.

What is bodybuilding?

Bodybuilding means to increase your muscle mass as much as possible. Some people will bodybuild for absolute size while others will bodybuild to increase size somewhat but focus more on definition.

How do you grow bigger muscles?

Easy, you grow bigger muscles by doing exercises that wear our your muscle. Your body adapts by growing back the muscle bigger to allow you to lift the weights easier. The right exercises for your body will force your muscles to grow bigger. The right diet and nutrition will provide the proper nutrients for your muscle to grow bigger.

What type of workouts should I do to get bigger?

You can grow bigger muscles by working out your biggest muscles. Legs, chest, and back are key. More importantly, you should make sure your workout lasts no longer than 1.5 hours per session and that you leave several days of rest in between workouts. Working out 5 days a week is total overkill even if you're working out different muscles each day. Take your time and leave a couple more days of rest and you'll get more out of each workout.

What role does genetics play in bodybuilding?

Your genetics will prematurely determine how big your body can get. The truth however is that most people will quit long before they ever reach their genetic potential. It doesn't matter how small you were born, you do have the ability to get more than big enough if you really want to.

Will lifting weights stunt my growth?

NO! This is silly logic. Think about it, if this was absolutely true, then the biggest bodybuilders should all be very short since they spend hours more in the gym each day than you do every week. Scientifically, there has been absolutely no proof whatsoever that proves lifting weights has led to a decrease in growth. If anything, the extra release of testosterone caused from lifting weights should aid your growth, not impede it. The only way lifting weights could ever stop you from growing is if you lifted with bad form and damaged your back in the process.

Is it possible to get big without steroids?

YES! In fact, you can't get big with just steroids either. A proper workout and diet is key. The steroids will only give you a boost. Obviously, I would never recommend steroids since you damage your body and long term health. People who take steroids die early! It's known fact and still seen everyday. Think about the last time you heard about a top-level elite athlete dying of some unknown medical cause or heart failue. How is it that you think these top level athletes are dying? Aren't they supposed to be in the best shape and live the longest? Think about it!

Common Mistakes Beginning Bodybuilders make:

1. Doing high-rep sets or mixing in cardio exercise. - DO NOT DO THIS, you are training a different type of muscle fiber which takes away from your muscle growth. Doing cardio will keep your muscles small since smaller muscles are better for endurance adaptation.

2. Not working out the legs. - Everybody's got a cousin that does nothing more than a benchpress or curling. If you don't work out your bigger muscles, your smaller muscles will not grow.

3. Working out everyday. - Another beginner's mistake. They workout hard everyday because they somehow think that muscle grows when you work out. The truth is that muscle grows when you rest, not when you're lifting.

4. Putting too much weight. - Putting too much weight damages your body and risks injury. Worst of all, because you're in such a struggle to match the weight loads of the other gym rats, you are most likely to be lifting un-evenly and growing your body out of proportion. An unsymmetrical body will forever keep you from lifting a heavier weight. TAKE YOUR TIME.

5. Taking bad advice - Most people you meet in the gym don't know squat about proper lifting. Many of them have bad form and got big just because they were built that way. So how do you know that the advice you're getting is decent? It's not easy. My suggestion is to do your homework and read up on good advice online and in books and weigh your knowledge against logic.
