Lucky for us, the Miguel Cotto and Zab Judah boxing match tonight isn't the only thing with a name in the ring tonight. I'll take a quick look at other names like Antonio Tarver, Bobby Pacquiao, Humberto Soto, and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Miguel Cotto and Zab Judah. You would think this was an even fight since both guys share a good mix of advantages and disadvantages over each other. Zab Judah has probably got more speed and power. Judah can be very explosive and hard to hard when he's on his A-game. He's fought a ton of good fighters and has quality wins and made strong showings against other top fighters like Cory Spinks (who recently befuddled Jermain Taylor) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Zab Judah has actually been knocked down several times in his career. Zab Judah went down 3 times from ONE giant Kostya Tszyu and was also dropped by light-punching Cory Spinks. I don't remember the other times he's been down. Miguel Cotto on the other hand is probably going to be the bigger man with a stronger punch that will hurt Zab Judah even if he gets lazy and chooses to push it. Miguel Cotto is simply dominant no matter who he fights. I've seen him adapt to many of his opponents styles by changing his own style. He has a strong offense, defense, boxing skills, power, and a poker face to break down all his opponents. Many people will argue that Miguel Cotto has also been knocked down before. It's technically true but I don't really agree with that. Miguel Cotto even when hurt and hurt BADLY still maintains his composure and amazing ability to duck and slip most punches if not all. He was CLEARLY pushed to the canvas by Ricardo Torres when he was trying to hold on so you can argue that he's never been knocked down. Aside from the variables concerning speed and power we also have to talk about boxing intelligence. Miguel Cotto is much too smart to be in the same spot. You can count on him to always stay moving never allowing Judah to hit him more than once at a time. Judah is fast but he's usually better at moving forward darting his head around his opponent's punches. He's never been very good at fighting backwards as he usually ends up not committing to anything when he's moving back in my opinion. The clear difference in this fight is about who fights better when he's hurt. Zab Judah when hurt becomes a scared animal that runs around the ring and commits all sorts of shocking behavior. Examples of this would be when Judah got battered by Carlos Baldimir or when he threw illegal punches when he was getting beat by Floyd Mayweather Jr. Zab Judah's composure goes out the window when he's hurt or even confused. Miguel Cotto keeps his composure and maintains his boxing abilities even when hurt as he was against Ricardo Torres. He stuck to his plan and his big left hook and composure eventually broke down a dangerous but still outclassed Ricardo Torres. Miguel Cotto's true weight is closer to 147 and you can see that by his constant weigh-in appearances looking dehydrated. Zab Judah was never a great 140 pounder to begin with and probably moved up to the 147-pound weight class to win an easy title from a light puncher. The fact that Zab Judah is a southpaw doesn't mean much to me as Miguel Cotto is a smart boxer-puncher and does well when he brawls. Miguel Cotto is very consistent and he's a serious athlete. Zab Judah ain't the same and his record is showing that he's already going downhill. He's still good but I don't see him winning against the well-managed and fresh Miguel Cotto. I really don't think Bobby Pacquiao is that good. He's game and he fights up to the level of his opponents but he just doesn't have the extra ingredient to make him win. Humberto Soto has showed enough skills and power to be in against elite fighters. I'm picking Soto against Bobby tonight. Antonio Tarver is getting old. In his last big fight against Hopkins, he seemed to be tired and slow from the beginning as the supposedly smaller man beat him around the ring and took his title belts. You can say it was the massive weight-loss as he gained a large amount of weight to star as a heavyweight in the Rocky 6 movie and then made the light-heavyweight limit. He was tired just like Roy Jones Jr was and maybe the weight loss issue is true. Regardless, he's old and I'm not amazed if he ages even worse tonight. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. takes on another bum. This bum is special because he actually drew against baby Chavez Jr. before. I don't know how many more easy fights the kid is going to take before they let him take a real fight. It's a great way to build up his confidence and all but isn't that what the amateurs are for?
