A Quick Review of Margarito, Cotto, and Calzaghe | Print |  E-mail

I learned a few things from watching three of the biggest and most recent fights on HBO. Margarito is one-dimensional, Cotto is dangerous, and Calzaghe is smart. I saw what I saw and here's the proof...
Miguel Cotto is starting to get real scary. This guy is as calm and collected as any fighter. Talk about nerves of steel. I don't know of anything scarier than taking punches from a guy who has no feelings. Watch Cotto's blank stare as he knocks his opponents out and you'll know what I'm talking about. Many fighters go far to show no pain but Cotto takes it a step further by showing no excitement. His behavior as he was demolishing Gomez was truly frightening. His face resembled the cold-blooded stare of a serial killer as he walked Gomez down and bludgeoned him to a knockout victory. It was as though hurting people and taking abuse in the process had become routine to him. Beating up people had become a way of life.

I use to respect fighters with heart, like Arturo Gatti. At the moment, I'm starting to like the heartless fighter in Cotto. He's beyond human. No heart, no pain, no effort, he's just a machine. He's extremely methodical, adaptable, and does what is necessary to win. Gomez who looked excellent against Gatti, looked like a gladiator against Cotto. Cotto boxed circles around Gomez scoring at will and tangling up Gomez's feet as he struggled to unravel the situation. Cotto completely embarrassed Gomez in every way. He pounded his face with the jab and even knocked him down with one. The left hook dropped and severely hurt Gomez and at times even kept Gomez from firing his right arm for an entire round. Cotto's body was well-rehearsed it seemed. He would walk around the ring and pose his body at angles seconds before Gomez missed the punch.

I think Cotto is seriously almost ready for Mayweather. His jab and defense have tightened up even more and he's become very good at causing damage even when his opponents block his punches. I'd like to see Cotto in one more great showcase fight before taking Mayweather head on in a super mega-fight of the year! I think Magarito is foolish on trying to take Cotto. Cotto is a chameleon! He can fight going forward, backwards, and sideways. Against Margarito, Cotto will land the straighter punches and circle him all night long. I just can't see Margarito getting any of those sloppy punches in and I can't wait to see Margarito cringe when they trade left hooks and Cotto's is harder. Mark my words, Margarito goes down easy if he ever fights Cotto.

Antonio Margarito is extremely one-dimensional. There's no way I could see him beating Floyd Mayweather. No way, not possible at all. Margarito gets hit way too much and at times just lunges in blindly when he's being the aggressor. I didn't find his win over Cintron to be impressive at all. He simply pushed and pushed until Cintron quit. That might be how you beat the weak-hearted Cintron, but it's not how you beat Floyd. The harder you try, the harder Floyd hurts you with counters.

Off the top of my head, I can name 3 other fighters Margarito won't beat: Paul Williams, Joshua Clottey, and Sugar Shane Mosley. Williams already beat Margarito and Clottey definitely would have won that fight if only he didn't injure his right hand. I've never seen a one-armed fighter look so comfortable as Clottey did when he boxed Margarito with one arm. Mosley on the other hand has a world-class chin and definitely carries enough power and speed to punish the sloppy Margarito. Williams, already beat Margarito but I have no doubt that he could do it again. His southpaw stance and straight punches have beaten Margarito to the punch every time!

Joe Calzaghe beat Bernard Hopkins. It's as simple as that. You can call the punches slapping all you want but I am 100% sure that those punches hurt. Kessler was noticeably hurt by the punches and many other fighters were hit just as bad by the punches. For those who say the Calzaghe only slapped, let me ask you this: IF Hopkins wasn't hurt by Calzaghe's punches, then why did he run the entire fight? Against De La Hoya, Tarver, and Wright, Bernard Hopkins came forward. Against Eastman, Taylor, and Calzaghe, Bernard Hopkins ran away. Coincidence? I think not. After all, Calzaghe's a come forward fighter, wouldn't it make sense to back Calzaghe up?

The truth is that Calzaghe fought a perfect fight. Calzaghe was clearly the smaller fighter but he made the best of it by backing Hopkins with shorter, more compact, fewer, but more accurate punches. Believe it or not, that's how you beat a speed fighter. You don't try to counter from the outside where his hand-speed beats you all night. You get close and throw numerous short punches to disrupt his game. Hopkins was moving all night and Calzaghe treated him like a speedbag, not a heavy bag. It was a VERY smart fight and Hopkins was clearly disturbed. Hopkins waited all night to counter and never really got the chance because Calzaghe threw very few big punches. The right hand in the first round caught Calzaghe as his balance was slipped up. Hopkins cleverly leaned into him and threw a PUSH-punch as Calzaghe was standing square. It was clearly a slip and you can see it if you watch the fight again. Hopkins' best punch was the right hand at the end of the round that froze Calzaghe for a second.

Hopkins knew he lost the fight. It's sad that he can't fight like a man anymore. While he's certainly physically capable, his overblown ego won't let him behave like a gentleman. The white boy comment might have been to sell fights or cause psychological damage, but his bad acting job on the two low blows seriously damaged his image in my eyes. Hopkins held during the entire fight and used every opportunity to throw illegal punches and "cheat" when things didn't go his way. This is something that I've said before and I'll say it again. It was very possible that Hopkins would be arrogant by thinking he had the fight won and not give any extra effort to ensure that the round was his. He made this mistake before against Taylor and he did it again. What the hell did he expect?

You throw Paul Williams' name like he is a force. Too quick to make assesments about brand newbies. Paul
Williams just lost his belt.

Margarito is one-dimensional but an odd one at that. Take a look at his style...

Cotto to beat Marg would have to have to mix his inside fight with sideones, always moving side to side
etc..

Didn't Mayweather have trouble with Zab before they stopped the fight?

Paul Williams IS a force. He did knockout Walter Matthysse, and he did decision Margarito as well as a few other gatekeepers and contenders.

I said Margarito was one-dimensional, I didn't say he was unskilled. Margarito's power, volume, and non-stop pressure is enough to over-whelm many opponents, just not all of them.

I do think Cotto will be able to adjust and adapt while Margarito will have no other fight plan but to go forward.

And yes, I did think Zab easily won the first few rounds in the fight.
