Can De La Hoya Win the Mayweather Rematch? | Print |  E-mail

I watched the De La Hoya and Steve Forbes fight last expecting an easy win for De La Hoya. The big question though is whether or not De La Hoya actually sold me on his second fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. In a fight where De La Hoya was already established as the bigger, stronger, faster fighter coming into the ring, did he really do enough to impress me?
The easy answer is NO. We're clearly watching an old De La Hoya here. I saw many things wrong with his fighting tactics and I think Floyd will have even more new holes to exploit in their rematch. With that being said, De La Hoya still has a good chance of winning as long as he fixes these flaws:

The right hand punches - De La Hoya is clearly not a right hander. The right hand, although sharp just doesn't seem as sharp or as straight as one thrown by a natural right-hander, notably Floyd Mayweather. Watch the fight again with Forbes, and you'll notice that De La Hoya's straight right hand loops a little and takes a bit too long to fire off. Really, it takes him a split second to ponder about it before it launches. You can always tell the right hand is coming because he pauses right before it. The right hand to the body looks more like a whip than a sledgehammer. Of course it hits hard, but it loops too much and just doesn't look natural.

Lacking head movement - You can see Floyd Mayweather Senior screaming at De La Hoya in between the rounds for this. De La Hoya just doesn't move his head. He's aged to the point where he can no longer multi-task. His mind is focused on punching and he has no more time to be trying to be elusive at the same time. De La Hoya is a slow stalker boxer and he's certainly not as good at it anymore. I'd like to argue that Miguel Cotto has the best slow stalking boxing style at the moment. I'm not interested in seeing De La Hoya go through the motions and move his head just for the sake of moving it; I've come to the conclusion that he just doesn't have it in his abilities to move his head and he certainly won't be doing it against Floyd Mayweather.

Leans his head forward too much - I saw very little adjustments from De La Hoya in this aspect. De La Hoya can be considered an ambidextrous fighter and it seems to make him stand a bit more square than most fighters in order to get equal power from both hands. What happens though is that it makes his head drop a little more forward and lean in. Whenever you have a fighter leaning his head in it's very easy to counter and hit with uppercuts and Steve Forbes did just that.

Still gets tired - I had to wait a little longer this time but I saw De La Hoya holding back and taking a rest during the 11th round of the fight. He elected to walk around the ring and take shots instead of punching back. He didn't come to life and starting punching until the end of the last minute of the round where he tried to steal it back. We can most certainly count on Mayweather to stretch out De La Hoya's fatigue and make it at the very least two very easy rounds for Floyd Mayweather in their boxing rematch.

Lets add all the other intangibles such as the fact that De La Hoya's reflexes have slowed even further and he's lost some of his counter-punching ability and we have what doesn't look like a good outlook for De La Hoya in September. In all honesty though, De La Hoya still has a good chance. He may be only one-armed but that one arm has dominated many fights. If De La Hoya can find a way to relax and throw lighter, faster, and shorter punches, he will still have a great chance at beating Floyd Mayweather. De La Hoya did well in the Shane Mosley rematch and I feel he will do even better this time. It's important to remember that he was only one point short of a draw in his first fight with Floyd Mayweather.
