Bernard Hopkins VS Winky Wright. A chess-match between 2 of boxing's most consistent winners and boxing veterans. Read on to see how I score points for the betting favorite...
Experience - Both have been winning for a long long time and lose only controversial decisions. Overall, I've always felt that Hopkins had been fighting the bigger tougher competition. - HOPKINS +1 Common Opponents - Hopkins fought a prime Felix Trinidad, Wright fought and over-hyped come-backing Trinidad that just came out of retirement. Hopkins did far better with the prime Trinidad than Wright did with the shell of the champion Trinidad once was. However we are here to compare recent performances, more notably - Jermain Taylor. What happened? Well....Taylor fought a busy fight and started a fast pace and stayed busy. Staying busy is always safe because it will help tip the rounds in your favor when many rounds seem even. Hopkins lost because he backpedaled even though he land far more power punches. Winky Wright had seemingly better success with Jermain Taylor because he had an accurate jab and used it against the over-excited Taylor who would stray from the basics. I also feel that Wright's southpaw stance had something to do with making the fight far more awkward for Taylor leading to the draw that I thought was Wright's fight to lose. Hopkins is not going to allow you to hit him with multiple jabs all night long so you can forget about that. Hopkins is also not going to sit in the corner like Taylor did and try to bait you in for an exchange. Wright's success over Taylor will not work at all or prove to be any advantage over Hopkins. - HOPKINS +1 Performance Trend - Both looked excellent in their last fights. Hopkins defeated Tarver in the perfect finishing fight of his career jumping 2 weight classes to take the light heavyweight title. Wright may not have won but I think he did a great job handling Taylor's youth and showing he could even outgun him at times. It was simply Winky's fault for thinking he had the fight in the bag and giving it up. In the end, he showed that he still had youth in himself as well. - 0 Size - Hopkins is obviously the bigger one. You can see him fight as high as light heavyweight in the first fight of his career! He was able to stay so long at 160 because he ran every single day of his life! Winky Wright was probably best suited at 154 pounds. Don't be fooled, Hopkins is far bigger than he seems and this weight allows him to be at a more comfortable weight. - HOPKINS +1 Fighting pace - Hopkins is an old fighter and does not like a fast pace fight. He likes to keep his opponents' mind occupied with subtle hand and head movements like fakes and jabs, not actual punches. When pressured with constant action, Hopkins may lose as in the case with the Taylor fights. I don't feel that Winky Wright will push the fight fast enough to overtake Hopkins. Winky just doesn't have the aggressive style and/or power. - HOPKINS +1 Age - Winky Wright is far younger than Hopkins. Like Hopkins he has also suffered minimal physical damage to his body by boxing instead of brawling in his career. You never when Hopkins could get old overnight. I honestly think Hopkins is another one of those athletes that age slowly but you never know. At 42, this could be it for Hopkins, I didn't think Wright would be the one to do it considering even Taylor couldn't put Hopkins away. - WRIGHT +1 Winky's Southpaw Stance - It's never been a problem for Hopkins and his style is so awkward it wouldn't really matter anyway. - 0 HBO's judging pattern - HBO will almost always pick the younger fighter during close fights. If you watch old tapes, you'll find that HBO will almost always pick the fighter that's going to stay in boxing longer. Call it what you want; I think it's vicious safe-keeping of their investments in "undefeated fighters". It's not fair but it happens and could very well make the difference in what looks to be a very tactful affair. - WRIGHT +1 Obviously, I'm picking Hopkins and felt he was the much smarter bet on bodog. Lucky for me, the odds are in my favor.
