Miguel Cotto takes on Alfonso Gomez this weekend in what may be his first showcase fight since .... oh wow, I'm not sure Cotto has EVER had a showcase fight. So anyways, this weekend will be Miguel Cotto's FIRST showcase fight against Gomez. This fight should build up the public's demand and reasoning for why the Mayweather VS Cotto fight should happen. Mayweather had his coming out party against Arturo Gatti and Cotto will do the same against the man who retires Gatti.

Here goes the easy breakdown:

Size - Alfonso Gomez is clearly the bigger fighter. He's fought at the higher weight. +1 Cotto

Power - Miguel Cotto is clearly the more powerful puncher. He has taken on better fighters and knocked them out. Gomez is also very obviously the weaker puncher. The biggest reasoning behind this is the fact that he's bigger. They moved him down a weight class where his punching power is not as noticeable but unfortunately, it still is. In a fight where punching is the main activity, I'll have to go with +2 Cotto

Speed - Miguel Cotto has the faster hands but more importantly, he has the better trained reflexes. Gomez is sharp and very accurate but I have yet to see his skills against better competition. +1 Cotto

Height - Gomez's height may not help him win the fight but it might keep him from getting knocked out. Cotto does tend to have to lunge and reach a little bit more against taller fighters so that will help Gomez. +1 Gomez

Chin - Let's not be silly. Gomez's chin has held up very well but he did not fight anywhere near the same level of punchers that Miguel Cotto has. +1 Cotto

Experience - This department will make the outcome of the fight. Cotto has definitely had the better and more positive boxing experience. +2 Cotto

Style - They're both actually very similar. They don't have superior speed or too much aggression so they both like to counter-punch which comes down to boxing skill. + Even

Skill - Do we have to talk about this? +2 Cotto

I'm having a hard time picking between whether or not Alfonso Gomez will get knocked out. Gomez is the type of fighter that doesn't have the heart to win, but he certainly has the heart to keep himself from getting knocked out. A good example would be Jesse Feliciano - this guy fought Kermit Cintron like he was going to win. Gomez fights like the old Barrera - the guy who knows he's losing and fights just to go out on his feet.

This fight holds a special place in my heart because I actually trained in the same gym as Gomez for over a year and a half. He's tough, dedicated, and very respectful. He not only looks like Russell Crowe from the movie Gladiator, haha, he definitely fights like him. He's definitely a big guy, very sharp, and very focused when he punches. The main weakness that I've seen from him in the gym before is that he doesn't do all too well against straight rangy punchers. If you watch Gomez in a fight against a straight-puncher, he seems to be losing the fight on points but winning it on guts. I've seen him with problems against even smaller fighters in the gym when they throw straight punches so I know this fight is going to be really hard for him. From what I've seen in the youtube videos, unfortunately, Gomez still fights the same. In a fight against boxing's chameleon Cotto, I just don't see him adjusting to Cotto's straighter punches over 12 rounds.

I will also assume that Gomez is training for the hardest fight of his life. Cotto is the stronger, faster, and more experienced boxer in this one. With money on the fight, I'll have to bet that this one goes to an 8 point decision win for Cotto. Gomez is clever, wily *dirty*, and big enough to ensure that Cotto won't just run him over. By any other comparison though, Cotto outshines him easily. Lately, Cotto has been very good at taking his time and giving himself a few rest rounds to figure his opponent out and Gomez does fight in spurts which should win him a few rounds at most. This is a fight where both fighters know the outcome within the first few minutes and will happy to just ride it out. Gomez will find out he isn't gonna win and Cotto will be happy to just keep clean and simple.

Cotto by 8 points in a decision win is my pick.
