As soon I heard about this fight, I went on Bodog.com to bet $7 to win $4.38 that Jermain Taylor would win by knockout. I like both fighters actually but I absolutely refuse to pick Cory Spinks at this point in time.
Cory Spinks is a great boxer. He is as pure as a boxer as you can get. Boxing skills are superior and he showed it when outclassing Ricardo Mayorga and even outclassing Zab Judah in the first fight. Spinks is tall, has a great jab, very solid offense and defensive skills and movement to match. Sadly, that's all there is to him. Just a good boxing package, but no fireworks. He not only has a weak chin, he has a weak punch. Cory Spinks takes credit for the weak punch for hitting Mayorga numerous times but still not managing to hurt him. Remember what happened in the first round when Oscar De La Hoya caught Ricardo Mayorga with one good punch? Enough said, Spinks is a pillow puncher. Cory Spinks also takes credit for having a weak chin by getting knocked down by Zab Judah in the 12th round. You have to keep in mind that Zab Judah is not even a true 147-pounder. Zab also doesn't carry his power into the late rounds most of the time and for him to drop Spinks in the 12th round with a punch that wasn't that hard is a testament to Spinks' weak chin. As for Zab, I don't know what he's doing in the 147 division, looks to me like he's getting too old to make 140 and the 147 title from Spinks was going to be easy. On the other side of the ring with Jermain Taylor, a big strong true middleweight that could actually move up in weight in just a couple years. Taylor fought and gave Bernard Hopkins all he could handle in 24 rounds over 2 fights. Jermain Taylor is very fast, very strong, punches very hard, and he's a big middleweight. Taylor is a handful for any middleweight out there, he would dwarf Zab Judah in size, and based on Cory Spinks encounter with Zab Judah, Taylor is going to make Spinks look even smaller. I don't see how Cory Spinks, a boxer who fought much of his career around 147 pounds is going to do any better. Taylor is also trained by Emanuel Steward and has fought 2 left handers in his recent fight. Put in the Cory Spinks, and Taylor will have had 3 consecutive fights against left handers. His punches are going to more accurate than ever against the unfortunately southpaw Cory Spinks. There's really nothing left to say. I don't think there's anything Cory Spinks can do that Taylor hasn't seen. Taylor has fought the most awkward and pure boxing styles out there in Kassim Ouma, Ronald Winky Wright, and Bernard Hopkins. Cory Spinks, is not exactly THAT good. Kassim Ouma is a solid 154 pounder with excellent boxing skills that went up against Jermain Taylor. Taylor easily out-sized him in a strong decision testing Ouma's chin numerous times. There has been talk that Spinks has been loading up muscle to size up against Taylor. Anyone that knows boxing knows this has always been laughable. You can add unnatural muscle, but it will only speed you down. You also can't add muscle to your chin. Measure everything up and you'll that we have a total mismatch on many aspects. Cory Spinks can run, box, and duck, and slip, but he's not going to outsmart or out-punch Jermain Taylor. I say Taylor is going to land the final blow by the 6th round. The fight could really be over at any moment. Sorry Spinks.
