Ricky Hatton's Chance Against Floyd Mayweather | Print |  E-mail

I came into this fight having so many angles, I didn't know where to begin. I read some articles at other boxing sites and found one that compared Floyd Mayweather to the physical abilities of Roy Jones Jr but the slick boxing genius of James Toney. I couldn't agree more. Floyd Mayweather Jr certainly seems like the complete package.

Ricky Hatton, the obvious world fan favorite, is certainly not a complete package but does have a big chance in upsetting the pound-for-pound king with his aggressive style.

Where do I begin?
I'll come to weigh on some issues and ultimately do a quick analysis of who I think has the better chance to win.

FLOYD IS COMPLETE

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is as complete of a fighter as any that you see today. He's got it all except power. Personally, I think he could hit as hard as he wanted but punching hard doesn't guarantee victory so he doesn't bother with it. I imagine that his opponents find him dangerous enough because his speed and defensive magic.

COMMON OPPONENTS

Anybody who is comparing the common opponents between these two fighters is silly. Ricky Hatton knocked out an old Jose Luis Castillo who failed to make his normal fighting weight and no longer had steam in his punches. Tony Pep was knocked out in 4 rounds by Ricky Hatton but decisively decisioned by Mayweather. It's important to note that Mayweather won every round on the judges' scorecards and held a 51% connect rate on punches while holding Pep to only 14%. That's almost as good of a knockout if you ask me.

HATTON'S WIN OVER KOSTYA TSZYU

Many people think Hatton beat an over-the-hill Kostya Tszyu and therefore did not ever really beat a great. In my opinion Tszyu was old but he didn't fight like an old man. Fighting like an old man is Castillo. Tszyu punched and ran around countering and throwing as much as he could but Hatton still ran him over. Old man Tszyu was every bit as dangerous as any other young fighter if not more. If anything, that fight proved that Hatton fights to the level of his opponents and also that he mauling style could be dangerous against any opponent if used properly.

HATTON FIGHTS TO THE LEVEL OF HIS OPPONENTS

This trend has shown itself many times over the life of European fighters for many reasons. 1st off, I just don't feel there are that many good boxers overseas. Calzaghe who has just in the past few years proven his greatness as a boxer has shown that even he can take an opponent lightly and get knocked down. If a boxer is easily outclassing every opponent, you can't blame the boxer for not taking light opponents seriously. Hatton has never been less than impressive in a big fight! In fights against inferior or handicapped opponents, he does let off every now and then and I don't see anything wrong with it.

THE 24/7 SERIES

The series is supposed to be an unfiltered look but I don't see the show doing anything other than trying to make the viewers relate to the fighters. I'm not interesting in that! I don't want to see how Ricky Hatton or Floyd Mayweather Jr is just like me. I want to see how they're different! I want to see what type of training it is that makes them super tough. Moving on, I am not impressed with Ricky Hatton's training. The training is tough and rigorous but if he's doing only what I saw in the show, he's going to get beat. He should be working on combination punching and constant in and out movement. Punches should be quick and accurate, not hard. I remember when Manny Pacquiao stopped trying to knock people out with every punch he became a much more dangerous fighter. He was boxing not with body movement or but solely with the shifting of his power alone. He would mix in light and hard punches making it hard for his opponents to guess which way to brace for impact. If Hatton does the same and throws more punches, Mayweather could have a hell of a time blocking everything. I think Mayweather's fight tactic is to taunt and get the other fighter mad enough so that he throws nothing but hard shots. Throw more punches but lighter and faster punches, and we might have a different outcome with Mayweather losing!

THE CASE STUDY

The case study I'm using for this fight is the Roberto Duran VS Sugar Ray Leonard series. Deep down, I think Mayweather would win 2 fights out of 3 if him and Ricky Hatton ever fought that that number of times. Leonard underestimated Duran and Duran mauled and beat him around the ring during their first fight. The important thing about that fight was that there was so many parallels. Slightly taller boxer VS slightly shorter swarmer. Cocky undefeated boxer VS tough pressure fighter. I remember the last time I was so sure that Ricky Hatton would be beat and I was horribly wrong.

FIGHTING STRATEGIES

Floyd should be moving and pivoting constantly out of the way as Hatton comes inside. I think Floyd could win solely by using the double jab while pivot to the outside and repeating it like he's bull-fighting. Hatton needs to use his jab to get inside and throw quick right and hard left hands. Hatton should try hard to stay in his range and throw punches at Mayweather's shoulders and go to the body more.

Size - Floyd Mayweather is the bigger fighter. Not just taller, but bigger. Floyd is slightly taller and slightly longer than Hatton which makes going backwards that much easier. Hatton isn't a big puncher so it's going to be really hard for him to offset any size disparities. The good news is that Mayweather is not too much bigger and doesn't hit very hard lately. +2 Floyd

Punching Power - I think they both punch the same. Hatton punches more but less accurately. -EVEN

Speed - Mayweather has quick body and defensive reflexes. Hatton's hands are just as fast but his offensive sharpness will not match or overcome Mayweather's defense. It's not just Floyd's body that's faster, Floyd's eyes are also faster. Simply put, he sees it coming. +1 Floyd

Style - Ricky Hatton has the PERFECT STYLE to upset the classical boxer, Floyd Mayweather Jr. For those of you who don't know, there is a commonly regarded-to rock-paper-scissor relationship in boxing that consists of the boxer, the puncher, and the swarmer. The boxer moves around a lot uses the jab and counters well which easily beats the puncher and makes him gun-shy. The puncher likes to go forward and his stronger hands easily beat the swarmer. The swarmer likes to cut off the ring and win by out-throwing the other guy which can break down a boxer who likes to move around. Hatton has always been the swarmer and Mayweather has always been the boxer. My only complain here however is that Hatton would have a much greater chance of winning if only he was taller and longer. Regardless, styles make fights! +2 Ricky

Body Movement - Floyd is much more swift in body movements while Ricky is particularly good at only darting in and out of the opponent's reach. Floyd has clever head movement, shoulder rolls, and ring generalship. +1 Floyd

Reach - Hatton will be reaching in and Floyd will be leaning away. A long reach definitely helps to play the keep-away game. +1 Floyd

Boxing Skills - Floyd is the better boxer no doubt about it. His vast skills allow him to adapt better to any opponent than Hatton. The problem is however is that Hatton's style is perfect against Mayweather and Hatton himself is actually a very underrated boxer. Then again we could argue that Floyd is under-rated as well since almost nobody has ever truly tested his boxing abilities to the fullest. Skill wise, Floyd is just better. +1 Floyd

Mayweather's Hands - Floyd is not the type of person to let damaged hands stop him from winning. - EVEN

Reflexes - Floyd is a cat! +1 Floyd

Fight hype - The hype favors Hatton. I think he did some psychological damage to Floyd with 6,000 fans, earmuffs, and the weigh-in wave-off. He stands there proudly and acknowledges but refuses the Mayweather greatness. +1 Ricky

Unlike De La Hoya, Hatton didn't need to dawdle around deciding whether or not he had what it takes to beat Floyd. He simply decided to do it.

I could go on and on but deep down when it comes to what counts the most, I feel that Floyd has it more so than Hatton. Hatton, like De La Hoya, can have everything in his favor but he still won't have Floyd. My heart goes out to "me mate" Ricky Hatton, but my head says Floyd by decision.

If Hatton would have read this article and other similar to it maybe he would have won or made it a closer fight. Floyd showed out great he was as a defensive fighter. i found myself screaming at him because he continued to duck and cover from Hatton, driving down the amount of punches by Hatton. Hatton can punch more the question is, will he hit anything but the air?
