Picking Margarito Over Cintron | Print |  E-mail

I'm picking Antonio Margarito over Kermit Cintron for easy reasons this time around. Here goes a quick point-by-point analysis to help you decide.

Boxing Style - Both fighters still fight the same. Margarito plods forward with non-stop activity. Cintron likes to space out and throw the big shots. The 1st time they fought, Cintron lost mentally, physically, and quite easily. +2 Margarito

Size - Kermit Cintron is the taller boxer but the height doesn't help him. Against Walter Matthysse and Jesse Feliciano he looked a bit too lanky for his own good. The lankiness becomes very apparent as Cintron begins to get tired and his boxing form falls apart. +1 Margarito

Power - No doubt about it. Cintron's punches carry far more dynamite when they deliver. +1 Cintron

Speed - Margarito is a plodder and throws no matter what. Cintron relies a little more reflexes and his punches are definitely faster. +1 Cintron

Endurance - You betcha. Cintron is a puncher and just can't give or take pressure consistently every round. I just don't see Cintron winning a decision. +1 Margarito

Emanuel Steward - I'm starting to believe in the hype myself that Emanuel Steward is not that great of a trainer. He's definitely skilled but his fighters like Andy Lee and Jermain Taylor have been getting tired during fights and getting knocked out lately. In this fight, I certainly don't like Steward in Cintron's corner. +1 Margarito

Boxing Skill - Cintron is clearly the better skilled boxer. He was dancing and moving his head in and out of range. Margarito just likes to go forward and try out different combos. Cintron actually uses his reflexes more when he fights. +1 Cintron

Footwork - Cintron's got better legs and uses more angles when he's boxing. I saw him beating Margarito easily for the first two rounds so you know his chances of winning are not too far out of the question. +1 Cintron

In-fighting - Cintron sucks so bad at fighting on the inside that I'll have to give Margarito a point for this. The reason why is because he doesn't stay calm. Instead he starts going into panic mode and winging punches without really looking first. When he's too close to an opponent for comfort, you'll see Kermit grabbing and holding. +1 Margarito

Heart - Cintron was certainly more than physically able to continue when he broke down and cried during the first fight. +1 Margarito

The toughest part about picking the winner of this fight is that I KNOW Cintron is the better boxer. He's got more skills, more power, and better footwork. The only thing he lacks is heart, endurance, and in-fighting skills. Judging from his recent fights, Cintron has a knack for running into mid-fight crises and blaming them for his bad performance. Against Margarito the first time, it was a bad cut. Against Feliciano, it was a broken hand.

In a sport where the tolerance for excuses is low, I'll have to pick Margarito by 4 point decision win or a knockout during the later rounds.
