Before you get all excited, this article is not about hand-to-hand combat or rapid-fire weapons training sessions you see in the movies. It's meant to be a real-life explanation of what goes on during REAL military training at all levels - bootcamp and special forces. It is meant to inform you about the truth that goes on inside the hidden camps and to quiet the hype and buzz about what it isn't.
The military trains you to NEVER GIVE UP. Nothing more, nothing less. Again, forget about what you've seen in TV's or what you might have heard from even your military friends. All I ask is that you think with an open mind. There are many ways to look at the military and military training. There are many reasons why people have such mis-constructed views of the military and I will go over all of them. What Our Military Training is (or is) Supposed to Be: - endurance training (some strength but mostly all endurance) - weapons training with basic rifles and familiarity with other weapons - basic hand-to-hand combat - first aid, navigational, and other survival skills in the field Common Mis-Beliefs About Military Training: - Military training is fun. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. It depends on the person, the attitude, and the motivation. I can however guarantee that military training is guaranteed 100% to piss you off, leave you hungry, give you headaches, deprive you of sleep, and force you to perform with all previously mentioned conditions. - Your girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, or wife will love you more. WRONG...VERY VERY WRONG. Long distance relationships almost never work because the love was never really that strong in the first place. I've seen tons of families torn apart and divorces break out only after 6 months of deployment. Boyfriend and girlfriend? Ha! They never stand a chance. Sooner or later, somebody cheats or somebody breaks up. It's the truth. Just think "Out of sight, out of mind." And there's nothing you can do about it. Common Mis-Beliefs About War: - It makes you tough and brings out the warrior in you. WRONG, you will cry, piss, and shit in your pants because you are worried about your safety constantly. Nonetheless, you must face your worst fears and stare down the barrel of death numerous times. You will constantly be looking over your back at all times never really having a chance to enjoy life, not even for a minute. Imagine having your brother or best friend die....during war, this tragedy will happen again and again. Imagine a nightmare you can never get rid of. War gives you a nightmare that will haunt you forever because it is true and actually happened. No matter what, you will still be forced to carry on. - War makes people tougher. WRONG AGAIN. War mentally scars you leaving you nightmares throughout the rest of your sleeping and waking life. Any wrong sound or weird moment can trigger your worst memories sending you to a instant state of depression and fear. How would you feel if you could no longer be yourself again? Being tougher shouldn't mean losing your personality and becoming a robot. - War is fun. ABSOLUTELY NOT! Most of the time, when war isn't dangerous, war is totally boring. You will find yourself running silly mundane missions with no real objective and force to go through retarded protocols. At other times, you will have absolutely nothing to do except talk to yourself. Imagine sitting in a closet all by yourself for hours. Now imagine doing this for several months. - War makes you a hero. Again, DEAD WRONG! You go home knowing all full well you did things that you shouldn't do just because the orders came up from above. Someway, somehow you might have been directly connected to killing or harming an innocent person for an ultimately worthless cause. Worst of all, it's all you have to show for giving away many years of your life to the service. Have you ever thought about coming back as a war hero with only 1 arm or only one leg? How about a burned face or other disfigured or missing limbs. Are you really prepared to be judged on your appearance during job interviews, dates, and other social gatherings? People will think "monster" long before they consider "war hero". Common Mis-Beliefs About The US Military: - It is the best in the world. WRONG - We have the strongest military because we have the latest technology making it an unfair fight. Our special forces are among the best in the world but if we count man to man, we are by far a much physically and mentally inferior conditioned force compared to many other nations. Common Mis-Beliefs About the Special Forces: - They are trained to fight and kill everything. Again, the movies and video games have proved wrong here. - They are the biggest, toughest, crazy guys in the world! Again...WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. War is not UFC or boxing or 1 on 1 fighting. Special operations require patience, balls of steel, nerves of steel, tactical intelligence, combat intelligence, highly effective AND highly efficient manuevers, and ENDURANCE! Not muscles, not bodybuilding, and definitely not a body like Arnold Schwarzenegger. REAL special forces guys are usually around 5'10" and way about 160 pounds. Their smaller size means they will move faster and last longer on less food. They are flexible and quick. They are dangerous because they are elusive and highly intelligent, NOT because they can bench 500 pounds or rip a phonebook in half. Again, stop watching the movies and think smart. Special force operations are about stealth, speed, and surprise. Not about one guy killing 200. Why Our Basic Military Is NOT the Toughest In The World: - Because Americans are friggen cry-babies. Simply put, our culture has bred weaklings in a state of constant peace. Unlike many other countries, we were not thrown to war and forced to shoot a weapon at the age of 8. Because our country is more or less in a constant state of peace and being entertained, we are at a disadvantage mentally. - We never really had to fight a actually hand-to-hand fight. Most of our missions consist of calling in air raids and then a clean sweep with ground units. Forget what you saw in Saving Private Ryan, war hasn't been done that way for a long time. Why People Have Screwed Perceptions of the U.S. Military - Recruiting Lies - Simple, it's because of all the BS that is sold during the recruiting advertisements. They make it seem like you're joining the Lord of the Rings and touring all over the world to do amazing top secret missions and taking challenges left and right. Recruiters love selling the military on "adventure" and "challenge". - People's Ignorance - People who have never been in the military want to feel like they know all about it. They read books and watch war movies and get all inspired into spreading BS rumors as if they were their own stories heard from a friend, etc. Other ignorant people hear these stories and feel inspired and want to add to the BS by embellishing and exaggerating the story even further to make it better. Long story short, people just WANT to believe the military is all that and it definitely helps when real military people themselves exaggerate about what goes on inside. There is a lot more to this article that I will add later. This is it for now.
