This article right here will be the end-all to redundant questions about the United States Military!

Old-time favorites like "Are the Marines the toughest branch in the United States?" or "Which branch has the best Special Forces?" will be addressed here.

The United States military is a mixed bag of results when it comes to training and performance. On one hand, I can argue that the United States military men and women are the biggest waste of time, money, and effort I have ever witnessed in an organization. On the other hand however, the United States military has become the truest displays of courage, determination, survival, and the will to succeed. It is with this latter reputation that regular people paint all sorts of crazy pictures of invincibility and heroism about the US military.

Q: Can the military turn a shy, scrawny kid into a killing machine that puts fear in everyone standing in the same room with him?
A: No, proper bodybuilding training can make you bigger. Getting punked around in the military will give you the courage to and bravery to stand against regular "civilians". However, having size and confidence doesn't make you a badass, you need to build up the attitude AND reputation to go with it.

Q: I heard that my cousin "Bob" joined the Army when he was all scrawny and he came back super-buff and well-built.
A: That can be explained by 3 things. 1) You psychologically conditioned to WANT to see him in a different manner and to assume that he was in fact physically built under his shirt. But he might have been in fact the exact same size before he left but you never noticed because back then, you were psychologically conditioned to think he was "scrawny". (If I told you my friend was Italian, you'd probably assume he had black hair, yes?) or 2) Your friend got old and his metabolism slowed down allowing him to get bigger in terms of fat to fill in his skinny body and make it looking more full and buff. or 3) He is one of the FEW PEOPLE who actually train hard throughout their whole military contract and come back in a more physically built condition.

Q: Why is it that you seem to think the military doesn't make you buff?
A: Because the military doesn't train that way! Aside from what you may have seen in movies, the military never EVER trains with heavy weight training. Everything the military does is aerobic and cardio exercise. These exercises are the kind that people do to get toned, lose weight, and increase endurance. It will NEVER make you bigger, unless you're a really scrawny nerd and in that case, you will gain maybe 10 pounds of muscle from the push-up exercises but no more after that.

Q: What physical training exercises does the military use to train their soldiers?
A: Lots of endurance work. Much running and movement. They find tons of painful exercises that force you to move your limbs in simple movements that become massive torture after hundreds of repetitions. Most of the exercises are all very possible and simple but again, they're just painful. They also make you run around with your gear and learn

Q: Can joining the military really turn you into a killing machine?
A: NO!!! The military is the WORST place to go if you want to become a fighting machine. You may hear that the Army or Marines have the toughest infantry camps and that you learn top secret hand-to-hand combat maneuvers. At best, you will only learn simple judo throws, tripping, leg-sweeping, choking, sucker punching, and other basic fighting skills in bootcamp. You won't be practicing it very much and most people will never remember all that crap in a real streetfight. Besides, this is US military. What on earth are we doing wasting our time with hand-to-hand combat maneuvers? If your enemy is close enough to punch you, you obviously weren't paying attention during the weeks of M-16 practice. What the military can really turn you into is the energizer bunny. You'll learn to always keep going and always giving it 100% and never giving up under any circumstances...and for most people, this is all it takes to succeed.

Q: Are the Marines the toughest of all the branches?
A: NO!!! Joining a friggen branch doesn't make you tough. You are tough because you are invincible in the mind, body, and soul. A 150 pound weak kid who joins the Marines and absorbs all their training will still not be able to beat up a 300lb big strong guy. Today's society is too obsessed with labels and superficial affiliations. Nothing can make you tough except yourself.

Q: Do the Marines have the toughest training out of all of the US military (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines)?
A: NO!!! The Marines have the LONGEST bootcamp training period of all 4 branches but in no way does it mean that it is harder. In fact, passing bootcamp doesn't mean you're the shit. Bootcamp and basic training is like a high school degree. While the Special Forces is like a college degree.

Q: Is military bootcamp the best physical training in the world?
A: NO! Bootcamp training is the equivalent of a high school diploma. Navy Seals, Green Beret, Delta Force, and other Special Forces train to much harder physical standards and earning those titles is like earning a college degree. Special certifications given for top medics, snipers, and parachuters are like trade school certifications. Military training goes far beyond just fighting-related skills. The best physical training in the world is performed by fighters, and mostly endurance athletes. Only these people can consider themselves the true elite class of athletic potential in the world. The US military does not have the time to pay for soldiers to spend 5-7 hours a day in a gym. Keep in mind that not only is the US military not the best physical training in the US, it is also not the best physical training in the world. Many other armies train harder physically than we do. China, Korea, Iraq, Iran, Israel, and many other countries train their armies to be much tougher because they need to. In the rest of the world, there are constant wars and bloodshed over the past decades and only the strictest most torturous training can teach a new soldier how to survive. You can also get much better physical training by being a world-class elite level athlete like the ones in the Olympics.

Q: Are the soldiers in the Special Forces the most dangerous men in the world?
A: Yes and No. Keep in mind that they are trained to survive and to perform their mission under the most difficult conditions. This makes them multi-talented in skills but it doesn't focus solely on their ability to fight. They will be mentally and physically tougher than many people and still be more knowledgeable in fight tactics against the average civilian, but they wouldn't last in the ring against a purebred fighter who's trained for years and years on how to kick ass. Of course, I'm sure they would hold their own if the fight was held in a jungle in a hostile environment with no food.

Q: So what makes the US military the strongest military in the world?
A: Our technology and the Air Force and the Navy. Our Air Force bombs the hell out other countries long before they can even detect us or see us coming. Our Navy boats can launch massive air raids and artillery strikes from miles and miles away without risking any damage.

written by Alias , May 06, 2008
Army training allows them to beat average people and of course they can beat top athletes in the street... with the M-16 they were trained to use.

Ive been training in fighting since 13 and now working toward an MMA career and if army training is all a person has, they aren't going to take me down.

Me being an athlete for combat, I train every muscle I can in my body and I really doubt they do that in the army. If they did, we would have a crappy army since they have no need for that type of training since today guns are used in war and not fists.

I don't mean to bash anyone in the US army though, they risk their lives for their country and they aren't any less man just because they most likely would get beat down easily by fighters like the ones in organizations like UFC or Strikeforce or etc.

Why don't you read a book before making one of the dummest statements of all time.

Elite endurance athletes and "fighters" fail all the time at SEAL, Green Beret, and other Special Forces
training because they couldn't hack it.

Current members of these units are elite athletes with a PHD level of knowledge in their warcraft.

the marines have by far the most difficult basic training of any branch in the military. it is the longest, most physicaly and mentally tough, and requires every marine to leave a riflemen. The army has gotten so incrediibly soft that they now put out step ladders for recruits jumping out of the back of a transport during training. All the while marines are making 10 mile humps with 60 lbs on the their back.

You compare the stress of college to Spe Ops training? I've been apart of both, your crazy, and you lack the knowledge to make such a remark. I would be more than happy to return to college and do it all over again... but, I will never go through Basic Underwater Demolition Seal Training again.. Noway. College only slightly prepared me for that journey. And while you sit at home and type on your computer about subjects you dont understand, people are out doing things that get no recognition far away from home. Open your eyes

I personally know marines and UFC fighters. I have worked out with these guys before they were such. I'v competed with the now marines in high school and fighters in college. The marines didn't seem to have to the athletic ability or mental toughness as the now ufc fighters did, but they still made it in the marines. I now question if getting past the basic training or boot camp is as difficult as people make it out to be. The very few guys I know who made it to the ufc are really true athletes. Being in any branch is about more than tough training. Having the courage to put your life in harm’s way for our county is probably what gives the men and women the respect they do deserve. I don’t see a whole lot of top athletes leaving there profession for the military. With the exception of Pat Tillman and his brother who did so.

This has some truth but was written in a very immature fashion.
written by Al , April 26, 2009
I numbered the 'Q and A's in the article so i wouldn't have to repost the entire thing with my own responses.

1. Of course not that's not it's purpose especially in modern warfare. Of course you have to be fit and not a softee but don't expect it to turn you into Mike Tyson. The military produces warfighters not streetfighters.

2. He could have very well gotten buffer. The Army likely instilled in him the self-discipline (coupled with the boredom of barracks life compared to civilian) to actually hit the weights.

3. Correct, the military isn't looking for max strength. Bulking up in the military is bad because it hurts your long distance running. The military looks for overall fitness, especially running, and upper body strength endurance.

4. Correct mainly running, crunches, pull ups, push ups, and many other aggravating excercises(mountain climbers, squat thrusts). It's basically to weed out those who aren't serious enough or lack the capability to hack it(most can though).

5. Well, that's just a stupid question. They produce warfighters not streetfighters. If the average US Marine could hang with Chuck Liddel(UFC) in the octogan that would be spectacular but it's completely unrealistic and wouldn't effect the war were in or any we could be in by any substantial degree.

6. Yes. USMC bootcamp is more physically demanding than that of the other 3 services but it doesn't mean every Marine can kick everyone elses ass. The Marine Corps success is due to high, strict physical standards, discipline unmatched in the other services, and most of all, high morale. I believe its battle history is sufficient evidence.

7. Again, all this reverting back to Special Forces makes me believe you're 12 years old and just bought Socom: US NAvy Seals. I believe were speaking about entire services not thier Spec ops wings that have become an object of public obsession.

8. Well of course not, that's why it's called BASIC TRAINING. After bootcamp you can go on to the special schools-BUDS, Ranger School... there's alot of them and to serve in a spec ops unit you'll have to go through several different often joint-service schools. If that doesn't satisfy you then you can do a joint tour with the British SAS, SBS, or Royal Marines. If we're not the best then it's certainly the Brits. They're the originators of your beloved Special Forces.

9. As a unit, definitely yes.

10. Our Air Force is largely a waste of money and serves to provide employment more than national defense (I have USAF relatives but sorry they say the same). Our Navy is the key to our dominance. Control the seas and you control the world. The US Army isn't the best in the world (I'd give that honor to our 'friends' across the pond in the UK) but our Navy is the largest(more tonnage than the next 13 largest combined), most modern, and most professional in the world.
We have 12 supercarriers. Other nations have 3 at most and ours are over 2x bigger than them.

Where do left feilders come from?
written by Semper , June 11, 2009
People like this in the U.S. have the ability to think so radically because, "personally"their freedom or life has never been threatened...you can thank your military for that. I dont want to say much else, people like you disgust me.

OOHRAH! Thats for my fellow Devil Dogs..except the idiot who must'nt be a true Marine for he mispelled spell Corps, wow! Marines? As for branches, we are the best for your so called killing machines. I can go on and on why, but if your in an combat MOS such as Infantry or Combat Engineer, (RRRRR 1371's ), we can definately NUETRALIZE a threat be it foreign or domestic due to our training. ....prick. The shit we put ourselves through to be the best, you can never imagine and I'm not going start going into the blood, sweat, and tears ALL service members and families have sacrificed!!!

So my advice to you would be:

1. To read "The Mission of the Marine Corps Rifleman" and the" Riflemans Creed"....that explains most, but you as a civilian can never trtully understand a "WAR" mentality.

2. Thank your Veterans, and especially pray for all those who've gave all, and their families. Then give all your money to myself, and the USO.

3. Do your research or gain REAL experience before writing on this matter. You are such a fool.

3. Do us a favor, "Gather all those like you , denounce your citizenship, and somehow leave this country at once and stay gone."

As a marine who has served in combat in the mideast and worked with soldiers, I have to say I liked the Vietnam veterans comment the best, and have the most respect for the veterans of that era. I don't know why MMA fighting is even brought into this conversation other than it is very popular right now, and no one has any other way of relating besides what they've watched on t.v. Just to let you know the boot camp videos you see on t.v. and on the net are extremely censored as to what recruits have to go through. The culture of USMC is that of mental toughness, throughout your entire career, and the training is to protect your brothers life (even before your own) and to close with and destroy an enemy. MMA is individual athletic competition for recognition. The 2 have nothing to do w/ each other.

I've trained with soldiers and marines in a few different martial arts styles. No doubt someone who trains in this techniques will be better off in a sparring match if they apply them right. I've seen marines get their ass kicked, i've seen fighters get their ass kicked, it's all about an individuals, awareness, skill, speed, and toughness. And yea, i've seen 150 lb guys drop 250 + guys. This guy sounds like he's never even been in a damn fight, and should probably just shut the hell up.

Well this is retarded, why don't you actually look up crap. It's like you played Call of Duty Modern Warfare II, and you think that war is a video game, and beat the living crap out of people after done with boot camp! Well its not. AirForce, Marines, and Army have the same bootcamp, it's all 8.5 weeks. But Air-Force is a bit more technical, so we have another 2 months in Tech-School, I respect all of the service members in the military. Weather it be, Marines, Army, Navy, AirForce, Spec Ops, the ones who ACTUALLY served our country, and not blame other branches. And no, just because a Marine got out of bootcamp, doesn't mean he can kick a guys ass who's tougher than him, Marines have respect for other individuals.

And WHAT THE FUCK are you talking about high school diploma after you graduate bootcamp? That's a horrible innuendo! No its not like that! You get picked by Congress, or a United States Senator to nominate you if you want to be Spec-Ops! You retard! I think you're twelve and doesn't know anything about any branches in the U.S. Army/Marines/Air-Force/Navy.

For me, I don't care about rank, rank is just a symbol of your status in the army, but what does it actually stand for? Higher authority? No. It just means you put your life in danger, and you earn integrity, and respect for what you have done. Doesn't mean that you can brag about your rank.

Plus, the strongest military forces is ALL of American Armed forces weather it be again previously stated, Army/Marines/Navy/Air-Force, the ones who put their lives in danger and risk to serve the constitution of United States of America! Get your facts right before! You write a blog about American Soldiers like me!

Seems someone spent too much time playing video games/movies and thinks that everything they say or show is true 100% of the time. And it seems that you took the 2 things you learned and decided to make an article about it. I would also like to address TIM'S DAD comment comparing military training to the stress of college(I mean can someone be more ignorant). It's NOTHING ALIKE!!! Personally I think the training and standards are way too low atm, only about 8 -12% of the people that join are cut out for the job, the rest should go to college or back home(more people join just for the benefits nowadays). Stardarts definetely have to go up(Over 30% don't really deserve to pass boot camp). ALSO how in hell we ended up comparing up soldiers with show performers??? (PLEASE explain your logic). And there is NO proper training for how to survive with no ammo using hands and feet (again to many games/movies), it would be mainly good instincts and a shitload of luck(perhaps The TERMINATOR or The HULK can do without:)

War vs. Performance?
written by Jason , January 21, 2010
Hmm, comparing the U.S. military soldiers with UFC Fighters? UFC is a SPORT. Military soldiers/Marines are trained to survive, and to kill. One has to also keep in mind that boot camp is simply BASIC training. One a recruit graduates, then the recruit goes into whatever field he/she has chosen/given. You cannot confuse a Marine infantryman with someone who is in Public Affairs. These are two different types of Animal. It's like comparing a wolf with a dog. One is house trained and the other isn't. Would a Marine infantry man lose against a UFC Fighter in the octagon using the UFC's rules and location? Perhaps. But remember, in the Marine's octagon (war), he can't TAP OUT when the pain becomes too much.
So, in essence, your comparison between Military and UFC Fighters is naive and silly, one dies when the pain is too much and the other simply taps out.
